Netizens say that some of the ice creams made by a Chinese brand don’t melt even when they are burned, which is probably because of chemicals. A video on the internet shows that Chicecrea’s ice cream, which has been called the “Hermes of ice cream,” doesn’t melt when lit on fire with a lighter.

Even when left in a room with a temperature of 31 degrees Celsius (88 degrees Fahrenheit) for an hour or in front of a very hot flame, the ice creams did not completely melt. The video has caused a huge backlash against the brand. People on the Internet are questioning the high prices of the company’s products and whether they have too many additives.

But in a statement, the company said that its products were safe and in line with national rules for food safety. In a Weibo post, the brand said, “We believe that it is not scientific to judge the quality of ice cream by baking, drying or heating ice cream.”

A senior national food inspector named Wang Silu told AFP that the products used to thicken the ice cream were safe.

Chicecream has been marketed as a Chinese alternative to Western brands like Magnum and Haagen-Dazs. It uses ingredients that are supposed to be natural and designs that are based on things found in China. The most expensive flavour of Chicecream, which in Chinese is called “Zhong Xue Gao,” costs 66 yuan, or $10.
