Etienne Klein, a well-known French scientist, tweeted a picture of what he said was a red ball of the fire taken by the James Webb Space Telescope last week. Twitter users were excited about the new discovery, but it turned out that the picture was actually of chorizo, a Spanish sausage.

As the image went viral on Twitter, Klein commented on the “level of detail” in his post and pointed out that it was taken by the James Webb Space Telescope. But the French scientist changed his mind and said it wasn’t a star but a spicy sausage.

Klein said that people should be careful with “images that seem to speak for themselves”  and apologised for the error. After the news came out, people shared the photo on social media because they thought it was funny.

Klein said, “According to contemporary cosmology, no object belonging to Spanish charcuterie exists anywhere but on Earth,”  At first, he said it was a joke, but he later admitted he was wrong, saying, “I come to present my apologies to those who may have been shocked by my prank, which had nothing original about it.”

Klein said it was a “scientist’s joke” Klein is in charge of France’s Commission for Alternative and Atomic Energy.
