Two teams that took part in an auto rickshaw challenge set a world record for driving at the highest altitude for this type of vehicle.

Greg Harris and Priya Singh, from Canada, and Michele Daryanani and Nevena Lazarevic, from Switzerland, set the record during the Rickshaw Run (Himalayan Edition), which was put on by The Adventurists.

Teams had to drive auto rickshaws, which are motorised three-wheeled vehicles that are often used as taxis in India, from the city of Jaisalmer in India to the city of Leh in the Himalayas, which is about 1,430 miles away.

For the challenge, the teams were free to choose their own routes. The Canadian and Swiss teams chose to drive to the top of Umling La Pass, which has the highest altitude road in the world.

The auto rickshaws drove along the road at an altitude of 19,024 feet, which is now thought to be the highest altitude at which an auto rickshaw has ever been driven.

Harris said to the media, “The road grade climbing to the summit of the pass was so steep that much of the drive could only be done in first gear; however, the Bajaj auto rickshaws were real workhorses and persistently made their way to the top, a drive usually only accomplished by higher powered motorcycles or cars.”
