Exam rooms are usually quiet and solemn places. But students at the Bicol University College of Engineering in Legazpi, Philippines, have made taking tests a bit more colorful.

The mechanical engineering students at the university decided to make their own cool headgear that would keep them from looking at each other’s papers and keep everyone’s attention on their own answer sheets.

Mary Joy Mandane-Ortiz, a professor at the college, asked for a “no cheating” hat. She asked students to make simple ones out of paper, but they came up with very creative ideas.

The students surprised the professor by coming to class with full-face masks, homemade helmets, paper binoculars, and fancy hats.

Some even put paper bags over their heads with holes cut out for their eyes. Many of these hats were made on the spot out of things like egg boxes or scraps of cardboard.

Mandane-Ortiz posted pictures of these cool hats on her Facebook page, and soon they were seen by a lot of people.

She told the BBC that this plan to ensure “integrity and honesty” in the third-week October mid-term exams was “really effective”.

Due to severe examination circumstances and anti-cheating measures, her kids fared better this year.
