Watch Video: Tiger attempts but fails to attack the leopard
An Indian Forest Service official, turned to Twitter to share an intriguing...
A video has surfaced of an extraordinary interaction between a tiger and a leopard. The tiger is seen charging the leopard in the image. But none of them engages in a physical altercation in the end. This is remarkable because tigers are known to prey on leopards. Leopards are preyed upon by tigers either for food or to protect their territory. Susanta Nanda, an employee of the Indian Forest Service, posted the video on Twitter and referred to this behaviour as “unnatural.” It has had 28k views.
In the footage, you can see the tiger distantly inspecting the leopard. The second is atop a tree. The tiger then charges towards the leopard as the footage continues. However, they stay clear of physical conflict. They exchange long glances before the tiger turns to leave.
Read the caption of the post, “This face-off between the tiger & leopard is bit unnatural. What do you think as to why both backed up without attacking each other? Peaceful coexistence?”

There were numerous explanations on the internet on why the tiger did not attack the leopard.

Possibility of serious injury?
AdvertisementRemember all the Jim Corbett stories where the killed man-eater was usually found to be debilitated due to injury – at times porcupine quills and the like
So not worth it from tiger's point of view

Submissive behaviour from the leopard. Rolling on back is to protect its spine and exposing the tiger to its sharp claws. Tiger backs off to avoid unnecessary injury. Ref: Richard Estes "A guide to behaviour of African mammals".

Tigress avoided a possible injury, maybe because of her cubs

To avoid risk of serious injury, which both are capable on inflicting on the other. Tigress needs to be fully fit for her cubs so does not want to risk it. Leopard knows it cannot win.
