A video of cars coated in worms has gone viral, with many people believing the insects dropped from the skies. The footage, which is thought to have been shot in Beijing, China, focuses on a number of parked cars that are coated in worm-like creatures.

Following the incident, some sources indicate that the Chinese city’s residents will now bring umbrellas to the street to avoid being hit by the unusual rain storm.

The video was published on social media with the caption “‘rain of worms,” leading many to believe actual worms had fallen from the sky.

Take a look at the video:

The Chinese authorities have yet to reveal the cause of the bizarre phenomena, but other theories have begun to appear online in an attempt to explain the riddle.

Some speculated that these were poplar blooms, a common tree in the area that is rich with seeds and when its flowers fall, is sometimes confused with caterpillars.

Another explanation proposed that the worms were swept up by a strong wind, which was corroborated by the scientific publication Mother Nature Network, which noted that this type of incidence with animals occurs after a storm.

According to the Mother Nature Network’s Scientific Journal, such instances with animals occur after a storm in which bugs are swept up kilometres by a powerful wind or a whirlpool.
