Coca-Cola Removes Bone Stuck in Woman’s Throat

A New Zealand woman, Beth Brash, shared her unusual experience of having a chicken bone stuck in her throat and being prescribed an unexpected solution by an emergency room doctor: drinking lots of Coca-Cola. After dining at a Wellington restaurant and unknowingly swallowing a small chicken bone, Brash initially ignored the discomfort, assuming it would pass. However, she sought medical help when the sensation persisted. Surprisingly, the ENT specialist recommended consuming four cans of sugary Coca-Cola to dissolve the bone.

Brash followed the advice and was amazed to find that the bone began dissolving, and her symptoms improved significantly within a day. While the remedy may seem unconventional, experts note that Coke’s acidity can break down substances, including bone. Though it is not a typical medical recommendation, the unconventional approach spared Brash from undergoing an invasive procedure.

The incident sparked interest and curiosity, prompting Brash to conduct her own experiment by observing chicken bones placed in Coke, which confirmed their breakdown. While the effectiveness of Coca-Cola for dislodging bones is debated, this unique case highlights the potential benefits of alternative solutions when traditional interventions are not necessary.
