Karen Davis, a passionate animal rights activist noted for her work on behalf of chickens and other domesticated birds, died on November 4 at the age of 79 at her home in Machipongo, Va. Davis was the founder of United Poultry Concerns (UPC), a nonprofit organization founded in 1990 that campaigned against the modern poultry business and promoted veganism.

Davis, a former English teacher, became interested in animal rights after meeting Viva, a handicapped, abandoned hen, in 1985. Her involvement includes organizing, writing, teaching, and protesting the mistreatment of farmed birds, particularly the billions of chickens slaughtered in the United States each year.

Despite fighting illness and deteriorating health following a fall in 2021, Davis remained dedicated to her cause and maintained her work until her death. She opposed the poultry industry in her works and fought for the recognition of chicken intellect and feelings.

Davis’s outspoken position on animal rights extended to campaigns against forced moulting and activities that denigrated or abused birds. Her legacy includes persuading others to reexamine their connection with animals, with some, such as radio broadcaster Ira Glass, deciding to go vegetarian after visiting her chicken refuge.

Davis’s uncompromising approach to animal rights was divisive at times, but her determination to preserve the rights of domesticated birds had a long-lasting impact on the animal rights movement. She will be remembered as a bold advocate who stood out for people who couldn’t speak for themselves.
