Laken Riley, a 22-year-old junior student at Augusta University College of Nursing, tragically lost her life on February 22, 2024, while jogging near a lake on the University of Georgia’s campus. She was found with blunt force trauma, leading to the swift apprehension of 26-year-old Jose Antonio Ibarra as the primary suspect by campus police.

Ibarra was taken into custody on February 23, 2024, and held at Clark County Jail. The investigation utilized campus security camera footage and physical evidence to link him to Laken’s death. Despite no prior connection between Laken and the suspect, the authorities deemed it a crime of opportunity.

Athens Mayor Kelly Girtz communicated with the community via social media, and UGA Housing implemented safety measures, including adjustments to access door schedules. While not a UGA student, Laken attended Augusta University College of Nursing.

Photos on Laken’s social media depict her life and achievements, including making the Dean’s List and being a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority.

Her mother often shared proud moments, celebrating her daughter’s successes. Laken’s family, including parents John and Allyson Phillips and sister Lauren Phillips, mourn her loss.
