Nicole Virzi, a 29-year-old fifth-year Ph.D. student in clinical psychology at the SDSU/UC San Diego Joint Doctoral Program, faces serious charges in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. While babysitting in a local neighborhood, she was arrested following a tragic incident involving infant twins under her care.

One of the twins, six-and-a-half-week-old Leon Katz, suffered fatal injuries, including a skull fracture and brain bleeds, leading to Virzi’s arrest on charges of murder, aggravated assault, and endangering the welfare of children.

Virzi, who has no prior criminal record, denies any wrongdoing. Her attorney, David Shrager, emphasized her innocence, stating, “Our client denies these allegations. She is a loving person and a friend to these people and would never harm anyone’s child, let alone theirs.”

The incident occurred while the parents were at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh with one of the twins. Virzi reported noticing an injury on the groin area of one twin and called 911 after hearing the baby scream.

She claimed the baby had fallen out of a bouncer seat when she briefly left the room to retrieve a bottle. She also stated that she was the one who initially observed the injury and alerted the parents.

Medical experts, however, described the injuries as consistent with inflicted trauma, not accidental harm, which was highlighted in court documents. Virzi is currently held without bail at the Allegheny County Jail, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for June 28.

Originally from New Jersey, Virzi graduated from Northern Highlands Regional High School in 2012 and obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Pepperdine University in 2017.

She later pursued a Master of Science at San Diego State University. Her academic journey includes research roles at the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, UC San Diego Health, and the Veterans Medical Research Foundation.
