Rev. Dr. Dorothy Sanders Wells made history on February 3, 2024, by becoming the first woman and the first Black person elected as Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi. Succeeding Bishop Brian Seage, who had held the position since 2015, Wells’ appointment marks a significant milestone in the Episcopal Church. Her journey, from her early life in Alabama to her groundbreaking election, is a testament to her dedication, faith, and service.
Dorothy Sanders Wells was born on November 10, 1961, in Alabama, USA. Her mother, Willie Lee Fields Sanders, was a dedicated schoolteacher with over 25 years of service in the Washington County, Alabama school system. Her father, Elbert O. Sanders, served his country in the U.S. Army and was a retired Civil Service employee. Sadly, both her parents have passed away. Dorothy, their only child, drew strength and inspiration from their commitment and hard work, values that would profoundly shape her future.
Dorothy’s educational path began in her hometown, where she completed high school before heading to Rhodes College for her bachelor’s degree. She then earned her Juris Doctorate from the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. Eager to deepen her spiritual knowledge, she pursued a master’s degree in divinity from the Memphis Theological Seminary and later a doctorate in ministry from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. Her extensive education provided a robust foundation for her dual careers in law and ministry.
Dorothy Sanders Wells built an impressive career in various fields before her historic election. She spent 18 years as an employee benefits attorney, including 15 years at FedEx Corporation and time at the law firm of Waring Cox, PLLC. Later, she answered a spiritual calling, enrolling in divinity school and eventually becoming the rector of St. George’s Episcopal Church in Germantown, Tennessee. Her leadership extended beyond the church as she served on the boards of the Metropolitan Inter-faith Association (MIFA), Church Health, Community Alliance for the Homeless, and Room in the Inn-Memphis.
Dorothy Sanders Wells is married to Herbert Wells, a director at FedEx and a University of Memphis graduate. The couple has been together for around three decades and has two daughters, Alexis and Meredith. Despite her prominent role, Dorothy values her privacy, focusing on her family and her ministry.
