Early Life of Caterina Fake

Caterina Fake was born on June 13, 1969, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and grew up in New Jersey. From an early age, she had a love for classical music and poetry. She attended Choate Rosemary Hall in Connecticut for high school and then went on to Smith College in Massachusetts. Eventually, she transferred to Vassar College in New York, where she earned her degree in English in 1991.

Starting Out in Tech World

After graduating, Fake took on various jobs, ranging from a painter’s assistant to an investment banker. Her entry into the tech world began in 1997 when she joined Netscape to manage its community forums. This role sparked her interest in the internet and set the stage for her future entrepreneurial ventures.

Creating Flickr

In 2002, Fake co-founded Ludicorp in Vancouver, Canada, along with Stewart Butterfield and Jason Classon. This led to the launch of Flickr in 2004, a platform initially designed for photographers to host high-resolution photos. Flickr quickly gained popularity and became one of the world’s top photo-sharing services. In 2005, Yahoo! acquired Flickr for around $30 million. After the acquisition, Fake continued to innovate at Yahoo! until she left in 2008.

Venturing with Hunch & Beyond

In 2007, Fake co-founded Hunch with Chris Dixon. The website, launched in 2009, offered personalized product recommendations. eBay acquired Hunch in 2011 for approximately $80 million. Despite the eventual shutdown of the public-facing site, its technology continued to influence eBay’s recommendation systems. Fake also founded Findery, a mobile photo-sharing site, and has served on numerous boards, including Creative Commons and the Sundance Institute.

Personal Life of Caterina Fake

Caterina Fake’s contributions have earned her numerous accolades. She has been featured in top business leader lists by Bloomberg Businessweek, Forbes, and Fast Company.
