Ryne Sandberg, the iconic former MLB player, boasts an impressive net worth of $16 million. Over a distinguished 16-year career primarily with the Chicago Cubs, Sandberg earned acclaim and financial success. Notably, in 1992, he was the highest-paid player in baseball, earning $7 million annually, equivalent to $14 million today when adjusted for inflation. His career earnings total around $25 million, reflecting his elite status in the sport.
Born on September 18, 1959, in Spokane, Washington, Sandberg excelled in both baseball and football during his high school years at North Central High School. Although he committed to Washington State University, he chose to enter the MLB draft instead. Sandberg was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1978, beginning his professional journey with the Helena Phillies and rapidly moving up through the minors.
Sandberg’s career took off after being traded to the Chicago Cubs before the 1982 season, a move deemed one of the best in Cubs history. He had a breakout year in 1984, earning his first Gold Glove and Silver Slugger Awards, and was named National League MVP. His defensive prowess and offensive skills defined his career, including a record-setting 123 consecutive error-free games at second base.
After retiring from playing in 1997, Sandberg transitioned to a managerial role. He began managing minor league teams before taking on a major league role with the Philadelphia Phillies. He managed the Phillies from 2013 to 2015 before stepping down and later served as a goodwill ambassador for the Cubs.
Sandberg’s personal life includes two marriages. His first wife, Cindy, and he had two children before their divorce in 1995. He later married Margaret, with whom he co-founded the Ryno Kid Care foundation. The couple splits their time between a Phoenix home and a lakefront property in Lake Bluff, Illinois. They purchased their Lake Michigan home for $1.1 million in 2016 and previously owned a Phoenix residence sold in 2017 for $1.925 million.
