Nive Nielsen, a Greenlandic singer-songwriter and actress, has made waves with her unique blend of talents. From fronting the acclaimed band Nive and The Deer Children to her roles in film and television, Nielsen’s journey is a testament to her versatile artistry.
Nive Nielsen launched her music career with Nive and The Deer Children, whose debut album Nive Sings! (2009) achieved gold status in Greenland. The band’s success was marked by standout performances for Greenland’s self-government and the Queen of Denmark. Their international acclaim continued with tours across Europe, North America, Japan, and South Korea, and their second album, Feet First (2016), further solidified their global presence.
Nielsen’s educational path was as adventurous as her career. After studying in Spain and at Red Cross Nordic United World College in Norway, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Politics from Carleton University in Ottawa and a Master of Arts in Visual Anthropology from Goldsmiths College in the UK. During her time in Ottawa, a friend and future bandmate, Jan de Vroede, encouraged her to start songwriting, which led to the creation of the band’s first song, “Room.”
Beyond music, Nielsen has made notable contributions to film and TV. She appeared as an Inuk woman in The New World (2005) and played the role of “Lady Silence” in AMC’s The Terror (2018). Her music has also featured in several films, including Nuummioq, which was showcased at the Sundance International Film Festival.
Growing up in Nuuk, Nielsen was influenced by Arctic exploration diaries and diverse music, from Michael Hurley to Betty Lavette. Her early exposure to these elements profoundly shaped her artistic journey, leading her to become a celebrated global artist.
