Ricky Bell, a celebrated R&B artist, has made significant contributions to the music industry through his involvement with iconic groups New Edition and Bell Biv DeVoe. With a career spanning several decades, Bell’s musical journey is both inspiring and multifaceted. Despite facing personal struggles, he remains a prominent figure in the world of rhythm and blues.
Born on September 18, 1967, in Roxbury, Massachusetts, Ricky Bell grew up in the Orchard Park projects as the youngest of 11 siblings. His early musical endeavors began with his friend Ralph Tresvant, performing as “Ricky and Ralph.” This partnership laid the foundation for Bell’s future success in the music industry.
Ricky Bell’s major breakthrough came in 1982 with the R&B group New Edition. Formed by Bobby Brown, Bell, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, and Ralph Tresvant, the group achieved fame with their debut album, Candy Girl. The album’s success, driven by hits like “Is This the End” and “Popcorn Love,” set the stage for New Edition’s continued success throughout the 1980s. Despite challenges, including Bobby Brown’s departure, the group’s influence in R&B remained strong, culminating in the 1996 album Home Again.
In the early 1990s, Bell, alongside Bivins and DeVoe, formed Bell Biv DeVoe, a trio that embraced the new jack swing movement. Their debut album, Poison, was a massive hit, earning quadruple-platinum status and featuring popular singles like “Do Me!” and the title track. Although subsequent albums had varied success, Bell Biv DeVoe’s 2017 release, Three Stripes, marked a notable comeback.
Bell’s journey was not without obstacles. The 1990s brought severe substance abuse issues, which he later overcame through rehab. His personal life, including his 2004 marriage to actress Amy Correa, and the 2017 BET miniseries The New Edition Story, shed light on his resilience and enduring influence in the music industry. Today, Ricky Bell’s net worth stands at $1.5 million, reflecting his substantial impact on R&B music.
