Vernon Presley, born on April 10, 1916, in Fulton, Mississippi, was not just the father of Elvis Presley, the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. His role as a father and manager was pivotal in shaping Elvis’s legendary career. Despite facing numerous challenges, including financial hardships and legal troubles, Vernon’s unwavering dedication to his family defined his life. This blog explores Vernon Presley’s journey, offering insights into his impact, struggles, and enduring legacy.
Vernon Presley’s early years were marked by modest beginnings and familial challenges. Born in Fulton, Mississippi, to Jessie D. and Minnie Mae Presley, Vernon grew up in a hardworking household. Tragically, his twin brother Vester died at birth. The family moved to Tupelo, Mississippi, in search of better opportunities, setting the stage for Vernon’s future endeavors.
Vernon’s relationship with his son, Elvis, was both close and influential. Married to Gladys Love Smith in 1933, Vernon welcomed Elvis into the world on January 8, 1935. He played an active role in Elvis’s early career, managing his finances and supporting him through various stages of his rise to fame. Their bond was a cornerstone of Elvis’s success, with Vernon often seen as a guiding presence.
Throughout his life, Vernon faced significant financial and personal challenges. He worked various jobs, including farming and truck driving, to support his family. In 1938, he was sentenced to prison for check forgery, a setback that deeply affected the family. Despite these struggles, Vernon managed Elvis’s finances after his rise to fame, striving to maintain stability for the Presley family.
Vernon’s later years were marked by both personal and professional challenges. After Elvis’s death in 1977, Vernon took on the responsibility of managing his son’s estate, which he continued until his own death on June 26, 1979. He was buried at Graceland, alongside Elvis and other family members. Vernon is remembered as a devoted father whose support and management played a crucial role in preserving Elvis’s legacy.
