Australian breakdancer Raygun, whose real name is Rachael Gunn, made headlines at the 2024 Paris Olympics despite not winning a medal. Known for her unique style and innovative moves, Raygun’s Olympic debut sparked both praise and criticism, highlighting her role as a trailblazer in the sport.
Raygun, a 26-year-old from Australia, has been a prominent figure in the breakdancing community for years. With a background in jazz and ballroom dancing, she transitioned to breaking with encouragement from her husband and coach, Samuel Free. Raygun holds a doctorate in media, music, communications, and cultural studies from Macquarie University, where she also lectures on hip hop and street dance.
During the Olympics, Raygun competed against top b-girls from around the world but did not advance past the initial rounds, ultimately finishing in 16th place. Her performance, which included some unconventional moves, quickly went viral, drawing mixed reactions online. While some criticized her unique style, others celebrated her originality and creativity.
Despite the backlash, Raygun remained proud of her Olympic appearance. She defended her performance by emphasizing the importance of creativity in breaking. “I was never going to beat these girls on their power moves,” she said. “What I bring is originality and artistry.” Her response reflects her commitment to pushing the boundaries of the sport.
She received support from Australia’s chef de mission, Anna Meares, who condemned the sexist nature of some criticism. Meares praised Raygun for her courage and dedication, highlighting her role as a significant representative of Australian breakdancing. Raygun’s journey underscores her impact on the sport and her determination to inspire future generations.
