Heavy rainfall in United Kingdom (UK) will continue to batter the country after floods hit parts of UK amid torrential downpours.

A yellow weather warning remained in place for much of southern England overnight and is not expected to be lifted very soon.

Some 30 flood warnings were in place for England on Thursday evening.

More 189 flood alerts warns that severe flooding is still possible.

According to an environment agency, it was monitoring the situation and the public were advised to remain vigilant.

The village in Cornwall saw 52mm of rainfall over the past 36 hours while Bastreet Downs got 53mm.

While the weather alert remained in place, forecasters predicted the situation in Cornwall would improve.

Earlier, the Met Office has warned of up to three weeks of rainfall as part of a weather alert in force across Britain.

The warning predicted up to 90mm of UK rainfall in parts of Devon and Cornwall.

Another two rain warnings had been put out for sections of the south-east and south-west, raising the prospect of flooding.

The downpours linked to a weather front created by Storm Elsa, which is currently in the Atlantic.

The Met Office warned that some communities may be cut off by floods over the next 24 hours as rivers burst their banks.

A rain warning had also been issued for an area of Scotland, with flooding possible near Dundee.
