LHC orders shutting commercial activities by 10pm to combat smog

The Lahore High Court on Tuesday issued an order to close commercial activities by 10 pm, to address the issue of smog in the region.

Justice Shahid Karim issued a written order based on petitions, including one from citizen Haroon Farooq.

The court directed the closure of commercial activities by 10 pm, endorsing the order issued by the CCPO (Capital City Police Officer) Lahore.

The court further instructed the Secretary of the Chief Minister and CCPO Lahore to implement these measures promptly, urging the government to issue a written notification to this effect.

In addition to regulating working hours for commercial enterprises, the court mandated private institutions, including banks, to implement a work-from-home policy for two days each week.

The objective is to minimize vehicular movement and reduce pollution.

Addressing environmental concerns, the court directed the DG (Director General) Environment to reseal industrial units that had been previously de-sealed due to pollution.

LHC ordered actions against officials from the environment department who were involved in the de-sealing process.

A detailed report on the sealing of factories is expected to be submitted during the next hearing.

The court stressed the need to continue proceedings against individuals who illegally park on green belts.

Additionally, a written order was issued for the demolition of a farmhouse causing damage to a green belt.

Regarding the Miyawaki forest initiative, a report was submitted to the court, aligning with its commitment to environmental conservation.

The Lahore High Court’s proactive measures aim to combat smog and improve the overall environmental quality in the region, demonstrating a concerted effort to address public health concerns.
