One person was killed and seven others were injured in a shooting early Sunday at an outdoor event in eastern Oklahoma, where witnesses reported panicked people rushing for shelter amid gunshots. Authorities said a 26-year-old male was in custody.

Skyler Buckner was arrested and turned himself in to the Muskogee County Sheriff’s Office on Sunday afternoon, according to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

The shooters at the Memorial Day celebration in Taft, approximately 45 miles (72 kilometres) southeast of Tulsa, were aged 9 to 56, according to the OSBI.

According to the OSBI, a 39-year-old woman was slain. The injuries sustained by individuals who were injured were deemed non-life threatening.

The OSBI first said that two kids were injured in the incident, but later clarified that just one youngster was hurt.

Witnesses stated an altercation preceded the gunshots, which occurred just after midnight, according to the agency.

The event drew about 1,500 people to Taft, which has a population of only a few hundred people. OSBI reported that members of the Muskogee County Sheriff’s Office were present and quickly began offering help.

Jasmayne Hill, who was working at a food truck during the event, told the Tulsa World, “Bullets were literally flying everywhere.”
