The hunt for a 3-year-old kid who went missing from his babysitter’s backyard ended in tragedy when his body was discovered in a pond.

The bones of the youngster, known only as Harry K by authorities, were discovered in a pond at a Christmas tree farm 650 feet from his babysitter’s house in Lowell, Massachusetts, on Wednesday afternoon.

‘I want to be clear that we have no idea how Harry got to that pond, where he was, or how long it took him to get to that pond,’ said Marian Ryan, Middlesex County District Attorney.

According to detectives, the boy’s parents dropped him off at his babysitter’s house about 7 a.m. on Tuesday, and at least one neighbor observed him playing in the backyard around 9.15 a.m.

The boy’s caregiver reported him missing shortly after, at 9.30 a.m. Police quickly went on the lookout for him, dispatching 200 officers, K9 units, helicopters, drone operators, and cops on horseback.

Lowell police used a reverse 911 system to notify the community about his abduction and asked neighbors to call authorities if they had any information on the kid.

‘Obviously, this is every parent’s worst nightmare: a child who goes missing for a short amount of time, the agonizing hours of searching, and then the recovery of his body,’ Ryan said.

According to WCVB, his body was discovered about five feet deep at the edge of a murky pond that divers had gone into on Tuesday.

The body of the kid was discovered shortly before 2 p.m., over 29 hours after he was last seen. He was discovered not long after police justified their decision to not issue an Amber Alert, claiming that there was “no reason to assume” foul play was involved.

The toddler most likely travelled through the woods to Rollie’s Tree Farm, according to police.
