On the phone this afternoon, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the ongoing war in Ukraine.

According to Chinese official broadcaster CCTV, Mr. Xi reminded Russian President Vladimir Putin that all parties should work together to resolve the problem “in a responsible manner.”

China consistently encourages a diplomatic solution rather than condemning or labelling Russia’s activities in Ukraine as an invasion.

Mr. Xi emphasized China’s willingness to assist in the resolution of the crisis during their phone conversation.

“The two chiefs of state shared opinions on the Ukraine situation,” according to a handout translated by CCTV. Xi Jinping stressed that China always proceeds from historical latitude and right and wrong in the Ukraine problem, making autonomous judgements. It vigorously promotes world peace, and global economic order stability.

“All sides should work together to find a responsible solution to the Ukraine problem.” China is ready to continue playing its part in this area.”
