For sexually abusing one of Alibaba’s female employees while on a business trip, a client of the Chinese e-commerce company received an 18-month prison term.

The victim reportedly compelled to consume alcohol before to the assault, according to the court in the eastern city of Jinan.

After she made her accusations public, Alibaba later fired the woman.

Her story has garnered attention and generated a lot of discussion, bringing attention to the workplace harassment Chinese women experience. The customer intends to appeal.

In China, the great majority of sexual assault cases are never brought to court, and even fewer are ever found guilty.

While the victim has received sympathy, she has also faced condemnation for her intoxication on social media. Additionally, the nation’s practice of workplace drinking as well as Alibaba’s handling of the situation were criticized.

Last August, an employee of Alibaba went public with her claims that the company had done nothing. On the same trip, she also claimed that a more experienced coworker had raped her. A criminal charge against him was later dismissed, but he was later fired.

The woman was fired by Alibaba, according to the letter of termination she received in December, which said she had circulated untruths that had harmed the company’s reputation.

About eight months of Zhang Guo’s sentence remain to be served after being in detention for close to a year.

According to state-run media outlet the Global Times, Jinan Huaiyin District People’s Court found him “guilty of coercive indecency, sexually abusing the woman against her will when she was drunk.”
