A judge gave a fishmonger a scolding when he showed up to a hearing in shorts.

Adam Jewell, 28, appeared before magistrates in Newport, South Wales, for the fourth time for driving while banned.

When he was arrested in a Skoda Fabia on December 22 last year, he was also found to be high on cannabis.

‘Next time you come to court, don’t wear shorts,’ Judge Stephen Harmes told him, in addition to the ticking off for his offences.

A pair of Adidas slip-ons with socks, a green sweatshirt, and a Nike T-shirt completed his ensemble.

Jewell, who has 24 convictions under his belt, appeared cool and at ease in court, responding, “Yeah, okay.”

He added outside the court that he ‘didn’t realise you weren’t permitted to wear shorts.’

He went on to explain that he had no objections to his punishment, saying, “It’s all good.”

Cannabis was detected in his automobile, and a couple packets were discovered in his knapsack.

He was stopped while serving a driving restriction that will not expire until August 2023.

He’s been convicted three times before for driving while ineligible. He was given another 33-month driving restriction and eight weeks in jail during a hearing in January.

‘If all of these offences had been prosecuted at the same time, we may have been looking at 12 to 16 weeks in prison,’ Judge Harmes said.

‘But I’m not going to do that today because the prosecution should have brought him in for them all at the same time if they wanted that to happen.’

‘The 33-month suspension is adequate. He has the option of paying a fine.’

Fines and costs totaling £609 were imposed on him.
