France vaccination chief says, there is a new wave of COVID. Due to two new Omicron subvariants, BA.4 and BA.5, other European nations; particularly Portugal, are also witnessing an increase.
Alain Fischer, the head of France’s immunisation programme; warned on Wednesday that the country is dealing with a fresh wave of COVID-19; infections brought on by new disease variations after daily new cases had hit a nearly two-month high; the day before at more than 95,000.
Speaking on France 2 television, he stated that there was no doubt that the epidemic was returning to the nation; he added that he personally supported the reinstatement of the requirement for face mask; use on public transportation.

What intensity does this wave have is the question. said Fischer.

Due to two novel Omicron subvariants, BA.4 and BA.5; which the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control predicts will eventually dominate the region; other European nations, particularly Portugal, are also experiencing an upsurge.

The variants don’t seem to have a greater risk of developing a serious illness than other types of Omicron; but because they are a little more contagious than the latter; this could increase hospitalizations and fatalities, according to the ECDC.

Traditionally, there is a two-week lag between cases and hospitalisation trends; and a subsequent lag with COVID-deaths.
