Governor Hochul of New York is expected to win the Democratic Primary; it will be more challenging for the governor to win in November. There is an increasing national backlash against Democrats in public office; as the midterm elections approach. Both inflation and gun crime are on the rise. Even though Hochul, 63, has been reserving her campaign cash; for a general election where polls indicate she isn’t a lock to win; New York is a solidly blue state and a Republican hasn’t won a statewide; election in 20 years.

A small amount of polling indicates that Hochul’s Republican rival Lee Zeldin of Long Island; is the front-runner. According to a Siena poll conducted on June 16; 46% of New York voters surveyed said they would like Hochul to be elected; while 44% said they would rather support someone else.

The potential of low voter participation and indifferent voters got a mention by Christina Greer; associate professor of political science at Fordham University; who asserted that “nothing is impossible.” Hochul’s contrasts from potential Republican opponents; in the general election are more pronounced than ever; particularly in light of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
