As Western powers and Tehran struggle to resurrect their 2015 nuclear agreement and negotiations deadlock, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov landed in Iran on Wednesday, according to Iranian state TV.
Lavrov claimed Moscow was adjusting to what he called the West’s aggressive actions in a videotape of his opening remarks during a meeting with Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi that the Russian foreign ministry posted.
“There emerges the objective need to reorganise their economic relations in all the nations enduring the adverse impact of the selfish course followed by the United States and its satellites so they can avoid depending on the whims and vagaries of our Western partners,” Lavrov said.
Moscow said last month that talks had taken place between Russia and Iran, both of which are subject to Western sanctions and possess some of the largest oil and gas reserves in the world, about the establishment of a logistical centre and the exchange of goods for oil and gas.
Moscow is contesting Western sanctions over Ukraine while Tehran’s clerical leaders are trying to maintain Iran’s economy due to U.S. sanctions that were reinstated after Washington pulled out of Tehran’s nuclear agreement in 2018.
Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal, expanding bilateral and energy cooperation, as well as global and regional issues, according to Iranian official media, will be discussed during Lavrov’s visit.
Lavrov and Raisi met, but no specifics were provided by Iranian State TV. Lavrov’s visit, according to the Iranian foreign ministry, was intended to “increase relations with the Eurasian region and the Caucasus.”
Since March, indirect negotiations between Tehran and Washington to resurrect the agreement have been put on hold. The main reason for this is that Tehran demands that Washington remove the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps from its list of designated terrorist organisations.
Lavrov will meet his Iranian colleague, Hossein Amirabdollahian, on Thursday, according to the official Iranian news agency IRNA.
