Malaysia imposes ban on chicken exports

The ban on chicken exports in Malaysia went into effect on Wednesday, with the goal of stabilising domestic supply and reducing shortages.
On May 23, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced the restriction in response to rising market prices for chicken and chicken products and a supply shortage for local customers.

The export prohibition will be in effect until the situation calms down, giving the Southeast Asian country time to build up a stockpile.
The reforms, which include eliminating approved import licences and making it easier for farmers to collect subsidies, are aimed at bolstering the country’s food security.
Transactions in markets around Kuala Lumpur revealed sufficient chicken inventories available for sale at the predetermined prices, which have been set at 8.90 ringgit (2.03 US dollars) per bird since February.

The lack of chicken and chicken products has been blamed on extreme weather, disease outbreaks, supply interruptions, and feed and other item shortages caused in part by Ukraine’s ongoing conflict.
As per figures from the Agriculture and Food Industries Ministry, Malaysia exported more than 49 million live chickens in 2020.
