  • The World Health Organization (WHO) said Wednesday Europe remained the epicentre of the global monkeypox outbreak.
  • It posed a “real risk” with more than 1,500 cases reported in the region.
  • The UN health body already announced on Tuesday that it would hold an emergency meeting next week.

The World Health Organization stated that an emergency conference would be held next week; to evaluate whether the outbreak could be classified as a public health emergency of worldwide concern. With almost 1,500 cases reported in the region; the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that Europe remained the epicentre of the worldwide monkeypox outbreak; which posed a “serious concern.”

“Europe remains the epicentre of this increasing outbreak, with 25 countries reporting over 1,500 cases; accounting for 85 percent of the global total,” said Hans Kluge, WHO regional director for Europe; at a press briefing on Wednesday.
