The Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, England has unveiled the public’s first look at the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s first official combined portrait.

The 210 by 110 centimetre oil painting by British artist Jamie Coreth was on display when the Duke and Duchess paid a visit to Cambridge on Thursday. Kate is wearing an emerald green dress from independent brand The Vampire’s Wife, which the Duchess previously wore on a trip to Dublin in 2020, while Prince William is dressed in a dark suit and blue tie. Susie Cave, wife of artist Nick Cave, created the dress, which British Vogue hailed as a significant shift in Kate’s fashion.

According to the Fitzwilliam Museum, the Cambridgeshire Royal Portrait Fund commissioned the painting in 2021. The museum remarked in a statement that Coreth included Cambridge itself into the picture by selecting backdrop tones and a hexagonal architectural design inspired by structures throughout the city. The couple’s titles, which Queen Elizabeth II bestowed upon them on the day of their 2011 wedding, bear the name of the region.

In 2023, to coincide with the National Portrait Gallery’s reopening, the painting will be on display at the Fitzwilliam for three years.

“Happy to see this new portrait unveiled today at the Cambridge @FitzMuseum UK!” read a tweet from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s official Twitter account.

According to the Fitzwilliam Museum, Kate and William met with Coreth, who are project supporters, and Sibyl Marshall, the late Sir Michael Marshall’s wife, who was the one who first suggested the idea for the image.

According to a statement from the museum, Coreth called painting the portrait “the most wonderful privilege of my life.”

According to Coreth’s comment, “I wanted to depict Their Royal Highnesses in a manner where they appeared both calm and approachable, as well as elegant and dignified.”

“I wanted the picture to convey a sense of harmony between their public and private life because it is the first portrait of them together and notably from the time they were The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. I hope the residents of Cambridgeshire love the piece as much as I have enjoyed producing it. It was commissioned as a gift for them “says the artist.
