Sonia Gandhi, the interim head of the Congress, sought out to opposition leaders such as Sharad Pawar, the leader of the National Congress Party, and Mamata Banerjee, the leader of the Trinamool Congress.

She delegates Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Mallikarjun Kharge to coordinate with other politicians while she is ill with Covid, following consultations.

The Congress believes that the country requires a President who can defend the Constitution, democratic institutions, and citizens against the governing party’s onslaught.

While the grand old party has not proposed a specific person, it has stated that it owes it to the people to elect a President who can provide a “healing touch” to India’s “fractured social fabric.”

“Discussions and deliberations have to be open-minded and in keeping with this spirit. We believe that INC along with other political parties should be taking this discussion forward,” the party stated.
