The United Arab Emirates, a close ally of India, has become the latest Gulf state to denounce comments made last week by Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal; two members of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Until Sunday, when a chorus of diplomatic fury erupted, with Qatar and Kuwait summoning their Indian ambassadors to protest, the right-wing party took no action against Sharma and Jindal. The BJP banned Sharma and expelled Jindal shortly after, issuing an unusual statement in which it “strongly denounces defamation of any religious personalities.” The comments made by BJP officials were “contrary to moral and humanitarian ideals and principles,” according to the UAE’s foreign ministry. According to state news outlet WAM; the ministry emphasised the “need to respect religious symbols… and oppose hate speech.”
