Four train carriages derailed between Mashhad and Yazd, killing at least 10 and injuring dozens.

A passenger train derailed in eastern Iran on Wednesday morning, killing several passengers and injuring dozens, state media reported. A railroad spokesman told state radio station Irib that eight people had been killed and ten state television had been killed.

The derailment took place about 50 km from the desert town of Tabas, along the railway that connects the town to the central town of Yazd. According to media reports, four out of seven on the train derailed in the dark in the morning.

There is a risk that the death toll will rise. Kazinform reported that three helicopters with an ambulance and a rescue team arrived at the scene of the accident.

The exact cause of the accident is unknown. According to local media, the train collided with an excavator.

Iran has a rail network of about 14,000 km (8,700 miles) across the country. In 2004, Iran suffered the worst train crash near Neyshabur. In the incident, a train loaded with gasoline, fertilizer, sulfur, and cotton crashed, killing at least 320 people and injuring another 460.
