Brittney  Griner’s lawyer, Maria Blagovolina, Griner’s legal team has lodged an appeal against the conviction handed down by a Russian court that sentenced the WNBA basketball player Griner to nine years in jail for importing drugs into Russia.

Griner was given a one million ruble (about sixteen thousand four hundred dollars) fine and the punishment was handed down by Judge Anna Sotnikova of the Khimki city court on August 4th.

The judge stated that the court considered Griner’s partial acknowledgment of guilt, contrition for the act, state of health, and philanthropic actions when making its decision.

A month ago, the two-time gold champion in basketball at the United States Olympic Games pleaded guilty to drug charges. She claimed that she had packed the narcotics by accident while she was in a rush.

The United States Department of State believes that Ms. Griner is being held against her will, and authorities from the United States have proposed a prisoner exchange to Russia in the hopes of bringing her back to the United States in a secure manner.
