A 4-month-old infant and an 18-month-old toddler were discovered in Arizona’s Sonoran Desert on Friday, according to a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol official,

According to a tweet from John R. Modlin, chief patrol agent of the U.S. Border Patrol’s Tucson Sector. The young children were abandoned by smugglers in the desert near the Mexican border in southern Arizona “to die.”

In the tweet, he referred to this as cruelty. “And it is heartbreaking. I applaud our agents for their prompt action in this terrible tragedy. And in all others involving the lives of migrants.”

Patrol officers were able to revive the 4-month-old baby after she was discovered to be unconscious, according to Modlin.

“Smugglers’ heartlessness cannot be understated,” he said.

In separate efforts to enter the United States from Mexico earlier this week, two children perished and a newborn was in serious condition after being recovered from the Rio Grande.

The sad instances occur as fewer undocumented migrants are being apprehended at the southern border of the United States after reaching an all-time high in May.

According to materials created by the Department of Homeland Security for a White House briefing, agents from CBP and Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, some of whom are based in Central American nations, were in charge of the arrests of an average of 240 smugglers in a single week in June alone.
