A 77-year-old man was killed on Monday when the drawbridge he was crossing started to open, leading him to fall to his death. He was in Milwaukee visiting his wife at the time.

According to a Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s report, Richard Charles Dujardin of Providence, Rhode Island, was about halfway across a bridge near Kilbourn Avenue and Riverwalk Walk when it started to rise.

Rosemarie Dujardin, his wife, had already reached the other side.

According to the complaint, the man tried to catch up to her but was unable to do so in time. He clutched the side rail but ultimately let go and fell to the ground below.

According to the medical examiner, Dujardin sustained significant head damage after falling an estimated 71 feet. Despite CPR efforts by the police, Dujardin was declared dead at the spot.

According to the medical examiner’s report, Rosemarie informed authorities that they had arrived in Milwaukee on Friday and were staying at a hotel in the city centre. The day of the accident, they were supposed to take a flight home.

Dujardin was allegedly reading an iPad as he crossed the drawbridge, according to the medical examiner. His wife claimed that he normally walked slowly and wore hearing aids.

Richard was poor of hearing, so it’s believed that he missed the lights, bells, and arms that descended from each end of the bridge; when it began to rise, he panicked and grabbed onto the side rail, according to the report.

To a height of 90 degrees, the bridge climbed. Dujardin managed to hang on for a minute or two before losing his balance and falling.

A location on Water Street controls about seven drawbridges remotely, including the one Dujardin was on. According to the study, the operator must verify the cameras before activating the bridge and has access to two live camera views.
