In connection with the murder of notorious Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger in prison, three men have been charged.

At a high-security facility in West Virginia, the 89-year-old Bulger was found unresponsive in October 2018.

According to the Justice Department, Fotios Geas, 55, Paul J. DeCologero, 48, and Sean McKinnon, 36, have all been charged with first-degree murder conspiracy.

After a 16-year manhunt, Bulger was apprehended in California in 2011.

On the day he was transported to the 1,385-inmate Hazelton Penitentiary in West Virginia, where he was serving two life sentences for 11 murders, he was beaten to death.

The three men face charges, according to a statement from the US justice department on Thursday.

Geas and DeCologero are charged with killing Bulger by repeatedly hitting him in the head, according to federal authorities.
