According to local media, a boat in New Zealand capsized after allegedly colliding with a whale, killing five persons.

The boat capsized at Goose Bay, which is close to the South Island town of Kaikoura, according to RNZ (Radio New Zealand), New Zealand’s public broadcaster, on Saturday.

Eleven passengers were on board the ship when it capsized, and five bodies were eventually found, according to RNZ, which cited the local police. There were six persons saved.

Police claimed that the boat tipped over following a “collision,” although they were unable to specify exactly what.

Popular whale-watching locations include Kaikoura. Deep seas are near to the beach due to the seafloor’s abrupt drop-off from the coast.

Many companies in the area provide boat cruises or helicopter rides so visitors can get up-close views of whales, dolphins, and other marine animals.

In response to a reported boat capsize, police announced in a statement that they had closed off a boat ramp to the general public.

They didn’t immediately offer more information.
