PM Truss considers moving the UK embassy in Israel to Jerusalem
British Prime Minister Liz Truss is considering moving the British Embassy from Tel Aviv to the contentious holy city of Jerusalem, which would be in line with the provocative action of former US President Donald Trump.
During a meeting with the Israeli prime minister Yair Lapid on Wednesday in New York City, Truss reportedly disclosed her consideration of the move.
According to a statement made by an unidentified UK government official, Truss told Lapid “about her reassessment of the existing location of the British embassy in Israel.”
Regarding the Thursday reporting, the Israeli government did not respond right away.
Despite Israel proclaiming Jerusalem as its capital, the UK has kept its Israel embassy in Tel Aviv for many years.
Prior to their meeting on Wednesday, Lapid expressed hope that Truss would move the embassy, and he intended to bring up the subject with her, according to a senior Israeli official quoted by the Jerusalem Post.
Truss stated in a letter to the Conservative Friends of Israel that she was thinking about moving the embassy and that she recognized the “importance and sensitivity” of its position before she was chosen as the UK leader earlier this month.
“I’ve discussed this subject in great detail with my excellent friend… Lapid. I will evaluate a decision to make sure we are functioning in Israel from the strongest position possible, acknowledging that, said Truss.
Trump sparked debate when he declared in 2017 that he would move the US embassy to Jerusalem, and he did so in actuality a year later. International censure was sparked by the action, which infuriated Palestinians.
Previous American presidents, along with practically every other nation, avoided establishing embassies in Jerusalem since Israeli-Palestinian discussions should be used to first settle the city’s final status. East Jerusalem is envisioned as the site of the capital of the future Palestinian state.
The only countries possessing embassies in Jerusalem are the United States, Kosovo, Honduras, and Guatemala.
