Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, has accused Russia of deliberately worsening the situation near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant (ZNPP) after the facility lost contact with the nation’s electrical system on Monday.

An IAEA representative informed CNN that a fire had caused the transmission connection connecting Zaporizhzhia to the Ukrainian electrical system to be purposefully unplugged. The line had not been damaged, the representative added, and it will be reconnected as soon as the fire was put out.

Ukraine accused Russia of being responsible for the bombardment that started the fire.

“I find it quite eloquent that Russia is acting in this manner at this very moment, just before the IAEA conclusions. Zelensky stated in his nightly address on Monday that “shelling the land of the ZNPP shows that the terrorist state does not care what the IAEA says, it does not care what the international community decides.”

He continued, saying that this was the second time the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station had been cut off from the Ukrainian grid, putting it “one step away from a radioactive disaster,” and that “Russia is solely interested in keeping the situation at its worst for the longest time.”

Zelensky stated, “This can only be changed by tightening sanctions and only by publicly designating Russia as a terrorist state — at all levels. “This calls for a global reaction, with the UN as the first stop in every normal state.”
