We may anticipate more of the Conservative MPs announcing today who they support to be the next prime minister of the United Kingdom as they did yesterday.

The only contender to officially declare their candidacy thus far is Penny Mordaunt, but that hasn’t stopped MPs from advocating for other candidates. Several of them spoke on Newsnight the night before.

Boris Johnson is the favorite to succeed David Cameron as the party’s leader and prime minister, according to Tory MP Brendan Clarke-Smith. Johnson has not yet officially announced his candidacy because “he’s probably waiting to see whether he felt he’d got the support… I’d say he’s certainly up for it,” Clarke-Smith said.

Conservative MP Craig Williams, a supporter of Rishi Sunak, said that Sunak would likely take up the challenge of running for leader “in the coming hours or days… there are definitely over 100 colleagues officially professing parliamentary support.”

The current leader of the House of Commons, Penny Mordaunt, announced her candidacy early and claimed that her colleagues had encouraged her.

Bob Seely, a Tory MP, is one who has publicly supported her. He stated: “I think we owe the country a collective responsibility to apologize,” and added that he thought Mordaunt had the best opportunity of fostering “unity and leadership” within the Tory Party.
