Russian Ambassador to the UK Andrey Kelin stated Ukrainians crossed a “red line” and that Moscow has initiated drone strikes across Ukraine in response for the Crimean bridge incident earlier this month.

“The issue is Crimean bridge. Crimean bridge is essential for our infrastructure. Ukrainians are aware that this is a red line that they should not attack it. They have severely damaged it and it should not be a surprise that there is a serious response to that,” Kelin told media on Wednesday.

At an international conference on Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed that Russian missiles and drones built in Iran have “destroyed more than a third” of Ukraine’s energy industry.

The ambassador acknowledged that “drones have been employed in this area for many years, starting in 2014,” when questioned about them.

Kelin denied that the strikes targeted Ukrainian civilians.

Officials from the US, EU, and Ukraine have all stated that Moscow has purposefully targeted civilians, and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday referred to Russia’s attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure as “pure acts of terror.”
