India has been engulfed in what is being called a “murder most vile” for the past few days. Aftab Poonawala, a young guy, has been detained by police in Delhi, the nation’s capital, on suspicion of killing his live-in girlfriend of three years.

They claim that Mr. Poonawala killed 27-year-old Shraddha Walkar in May, dismembered her body into dozens of pieces, stored them in his refrigerator, and then scattered them over the city over the course of several months.

However, on Tuesday, Mr. Poonawala told a judge that “the information being shared about me is not correct” and that he was “completely complying with the police investigation.” Mr. Poonawala is currently in detention and has not yet made any public statements.

Only this week, after Ms. Walkar’s father reported her missing, did the death come to light.

Since then, gruesome details of the purported murder have made daily headlines in India, and anonymous policemen have been supplying unreliable material to local journalists.

The incident has been called “the fridge murder,” and due to the intense interest in the case, news websites are constantly updating live updates on the investigation.

In the streets, demonstrators have burned Mr. Poonawala’s effigies in order to call for his stern punishment.

Concern over the extensive media coverage has been expressed by lawyers, campaigners, and former police officers.

“A ball-by-ball commentary is detrimental to the cause of the investigation and disrespects the deceased,” he told the media.

Inconsistent reporting and a lack of clarity regarding the case’s facts, especially how the couple met, have made it difficult to sort fact from fiction due to the frenzied coverage.
