Indonesian rescuers battles aftershocks
As the search for earthquake survivors enters its third day, rescuers in Indonesia’s West Java province are battling dozens of aftershocks.
Ridwan Kamil, the governor of West Java, reported to the media that since the earthquake on Monday, there have been about 140 shocks in the area.
So far, at least 268 individuals have perished, many of them youngsters. Over 1,000 individuals have been hurt, and over 151 people are still missing.
There are hundreds of emergency responders in Cianjur, the epicenter of the earthquake.
However, the area’s damaged roadways and ongoing tremors have impeded their attempts.
According to Mr. Kamil, the neighborhood is still subject to these aftershocks, some of which have put first responders in danger. He was speaking to the media.
“Currently we are coordinating [our mission] to focus on search and rescue… [as] many people are still missing, mostly in remote areas [and] mountain tops,” he said.
According to Mr. Kamil, rescue workers are currently travelling the area on foot and on motorcycle because roads and trails aren’t always passable, but they also have helicopters ready to fly patients who have been located to hospitals.
A number of structures were destroyed by the 5.6 magnitude earthquake that occurred Monday shortly after lunchtime near the densely populated town of Cianjur.
When walls and roofs collapsed, several people were crushed or imprisoned. About 80 schools in the vicinity were reportedly damaged, and several children were among the victims, according to officials.
“Most of the casualties are children because at 1pm, they were still at school,” said Henri Alfiandi from the National Search and Rescue Agency.
Aprizal Mulyadi was imprisoned after “the room collapsed” while attending class when the earthquake struck.
The 14-year-old claimed his “legs were buried in the rubble,” but his companion Zulfikar, who eventually perished after becoming trapped himself, pulled him to freedom.
The governor claimed that dozens of refugee camps had been established nearby and that at least 58,000 people have been evacuated. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency, which estimated that 22,000 dwellings had been damaged, was referenced by the speaker.
Landslides caused by the earthquake buried entire settlements.
In Cibereum, a family’s 28-year-old son died when his house fell. His family survived since they were on a higher floor.
“We must remove the victim’s second-floor concrete. The body is there “Tuesday, Sergeant Payakun told media.
President Joko Widodo was spotted with responders in the disaster zone.
“My instruction is to priorities evacuating victims that are still trapped under rubble,” he said, adding that he had pledged compensation to affected communities.
Mr Kamil said the government will repair damaged houses and warn “vulnerable” residents not to build there.
Indonesia, in the Pacific’s “ring of fire,” is prone to earthquakes.
In 2018, an earthquake on Sulawesi killed more than 2,000 people.
