Iran admits giving Russia drones prior to Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. The statement by Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian comes after previous denials by Tehran that it had supplied Russia with weapons for use in Ukraine, saying it “has not and will not” do so.

Amirabdollahian did not say if the drones that were supplied to Moscow were the type that carry explosives.

“Some Western countries have accused Iran of helping the war in Ukraine by providing drones and missiles to Russia. The part regarding missiles is completely wrong. The part about drones is correct, we did provide a limited number of drones to Russia in the months before the start of the war in Ukraine,” Amirabdollahian told reporters in Tehran.

Since Russia began its invasion in late February, self-detonating drones have been a major factor in the fight. They have the ability to circle for a while in an area that has been flagged as a prospective target before hitting once an enemy asset is located.

In recent weeks, Russia has carried out a number of drone assaults across Ukraine, damaging crucial civilian infrastructure and sowing dread in Ukrainian cities that are distant from the front lines of the conflict. Last week, Ukrainian officials claimed to have shot down over 300 Iranian drones.

A more comprehensive programme is described by a Western ally: According to representatives of a Western nation that meticulously tracks Iran’s weapons development, Iran is getting ready to deploy more attack drones and surface-to-surface short-range ballistic missiles to Russia for use in its conflict with Ukraine.

According to officials, the most recent shipment of weapons from Iran to Russia had roughly 450 drones, which the Russians have already used lethally in Ukraine.
