North Carolina law enforcement officials have taken a man into custody following the shooting death of a young boy on Wednesday. The boy was only four years old.

Dayshawn St. Paul Warren, who multiple sources confirmed to WCNC is the boy’s father, was taken into custody by the police and charged with involuntary manslaughter as well as selling or giving a weapon to a minor in connection with the shooting, according to the report from the local affiliate.

According to a press release issued by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, authorities responded to the scene on Charleston Place in the southeast Charlotte neighbourhood of Charleston Place at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The child was taken to a nearby hospital by emergency medical personnel, but he was pronounced dead there shortly after his arrival.

According to reports, the police department initially determined that the boy’s gunshot wound was self-inflicted; however, they have since recanted that conclusion and stated that they are conducting an investigation into the incident.
