Nato says Russian fighter planes approached its Baltic Sea ships yesterday.
The close call ‘enhanced miscalculations, blunders, and accidents,’ the military alliance said.
Two Russian aircraft “made a hazardous and unprofessional approach” to NATO ships “during routine operations.”
The planes were 300 feet above and 80 yards from the ships.
Nato warns it will respond appropriately to any intervention amid high tensions.
It comes after fears that Russian rockets hit a Polish village earlier this week.
Any direct attack on a Nato member might draw the military group into a war with Russia.
Western officials believe the weapon that hit Poland was a defective Ukrainian air defense missile.
Kyiv disputes this, demanding access to the bomb site and blaming Russia.
The US stated that back-channel communications between Washington and Moscow, which remain open even when relations are at rock bottom, failed after the Poland blast.
General Mark Milley stated his team tried to arrange a call with Valery Gerasimov.
‘Attempts were made,’ he told reporters. Fail. My staff couldn’t connect me with General Gerasimov.
Nato said two Russian fighter planes conducted an unsafe and unprofessional approach to SNMG1 in the Baltic Sea on Nov. 17.
Russian pilots ignored Allied forces’ standing inquiry messages and overflew them at 300 feet and 80 yards.
NATO declared the engagement hazardous and unprofessional owing to the aircraft’s altitude and closeness in a known danger area activated for air defense exercises. Interactions increased miscalculations, errors, and accidents.
NATO forces fulfilled their mission responsibly in accordance with international air and maritime regulations.
Nato will respond to any interference with its lawful activity that endangers aircraft, ships, or crews. Nato doesn’t seek conflict and isn’t threatening.
