The big cat P-22, who is about 12 years old, was caught on Monday so he could be checked out after he was thought to have killed a pet that was on a leash.
The Los Angeles mountain lion known as P-22 or the “Hollywood Cat” was “compassionately euthanized” on Saturday after a thorough medical exam showed the animal had “several severe injuries and chronic health problems,” according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Wildlife officials said that P-22 was caught on Monday to check on its health after signs of possible distress were seen.

Last month, the animal, which is thought to be about 12 years old, killed a pet that was on a leash. The state Department of Fish and Wildlife and the National Park Service said at the time that he was caught around 11:30 a.m. after he was put to sleep with tranquillizer darts in the nearby Los Feliz neighbourhood.

After a thorough evaluation, it was found that P-22 had serious injuries to his “head, right eye, and internal organs, confirming the idea that he had been hurt recently, perhaps by a vehicle.” The exam also showed that he had diseases like “irreversible kidney disease, chronic weight loss, extensive parasitic skin infection over his whole body, and localised arthritis” that were already there.

Due to the animal’s condition, the medical staff at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and the CDFW all agreed that it should be put to sleep with “compassionate euthanasia under general anaesthesia.” This was decided on Saturday.

The CDFW said in a statement that P-22 had no chance of a good outcome because of his old age, his chronic, debilitating, and life-shortening conditions, and his clear need for extensive, long-term veterinary care.
