As a massive winter storm continues to hit North America, at least 28 people have perished in western New York state, the most of them in Buffalo.

A state official claimed that during what was “possibly” the worst storm of their lifetime, several people had been stranded in their vehicles for more than two days.

On Tuesday, up to nine more inches (23 cm) of snow are predicted in some areas of the state, according to meteorologists.

There have been 56 fatalities associated with the storm, which has affected Canada and Mexico.

US President Joe Biden approved an emergency declaration allowing federal support for New York State.

“My heart is with those who lost loved ones this holiday weekend,” he tweeted.

Neighboring state New Jersey also sent emergency services to New York state to provide further assistance.

State Governor Kathy Hochul, a native of Buffalo, described the storm as “the blizzard of the century”.

“It is [like] going to a war zone, and the vehicles along the sides of the roads are shocking.”

She continued by saying that many emergency vehicles either couldn’t get to the worst-affected areas or were stranded in the snow themselves.

Emergency crews were reportedly checking automobiles for storm survivors while looking for bodies in snow banks and cars, according to New York state officials.

Buffalo state issued a “Shovel Smart” warning, alerting citizens that over-exertion from shovelings snow can cause heart attacks or back problems.

Mark Poloncarz, executive of Erie County, where Buffalo is located, claimed that others died from cardiac collapse while ploughing snow.

One local family with young children had to wait 11 hours before being rescued in the early hours of Christmas Day. The youngsters ranged in age from two to six .
