North Korea launched 3 short-range missiles, says South Korea
The latest in a record-breaking year of weapons testing, North Korea reportedly launched at least three short-range ballistic missiles on Saturday from a location south of Pyongyang, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea.
The missiles were launched from the Chunghwa region of North Hwanghae province at about 8 a.m. local time on Saturday, according to a text message from the Joint Chiefs to media.
Three ballistic missiles, each with a maximum altitude of around 100 kilometers (62 miles) and a flight range of about 350 kilometers (217 miles), were reported to have landed outside of Japan’s exclusive economic zone, in the waters off the east coast of the Korean Peninsula.
North Korea has launched a missile on this day for the 37th time this year.
According to South Korean officials, it fired two short-range ballistic missiles last week.
North Korea tested four missiles in 2020. That quantity doubled in 2021. The remote country launched more missiles in 2022 than in any other year on record, including 23 missiles in one day at one point.
More than 90 cruise and ballistic missiles have been launched by North Korea so far this year, displaying a variety of weapons even as experts anticipate a possible nuclear test.
Although the tests themselves are not new, the frequency of them has increased significantly, alarming the Pacific region.
